Conservative 1922 Committee
- Conservative 1922 Committee
The collective name applied to all Conservative backbenchers, although frontbenchers – other than the leader – can also attend when the party is in opposition, the name deriving from the year in which the Members of Parliament (MPs) who originally formed it were elected. The Committee meets weekly to discuss forthcoming parliamentary business. Its meetings help to keep the leadership aware of the mood on the backbenches, providing MPs with a chance to make their views known. Any leader who loses its broad consent is liable to struggle to retain his or her position.
The Executive Committee, chaired by an influential backbencher, oversees any vote of confidence in the leader (most recently in the case of Iain Duncan Smith) and the process of electing a new one (most recently David Cameron). The chairman announces the result of such leadership contests.
